WHY A and B drive is not used on the computer?

In this article, I am discussing a very interesting fact. If you are a PC user, you must know about the C drive where we have to install our windows operating systems and our required applications or games as well. But have you ever questioned yourself that why there are no “A” or “B” drive in the computers and why the Hard Disk starts from C drive? Well, you will get your answer after reading this short information packed article.

Hard disk definitely starts from C drive and if you expand with CD, DVD drive or another Hard drive, then all the drives will be named in alphabetical order like after C drive, firstly D drive, then E and F etc. Now the question is what about the A or B drive and why are these alphabets not used for naming the drives?

Hard Disk

In modern history (almost three decades ago), there were no hard drives no SSD and nothing for the personal computers at least in the consumer grade. In that time, floppy disks are used to store important data in computers. Those floppy disks were used for the installation of operating systems and applications and also utilized for storing required data. To read or write those floppy disks, floppy drives were must be needed. The very first floppy drive which was used initially for the computers was assigned with the “A” alphabet. After some years, a new and different type of floppy disks were available in the market which was not only cut the size by some inches but also stored data more than the previous disks. When another floppy drive was created to read and write the new type of disks, it was named the alphabet “B”. So they are the “A” and “B” drives.

Floppy Disk

When Hard Disk was invented, as the pair of floppy drives were previously named “A” & “B”, the hard drive was named “C” drive for suitability. Later if you add optical drives in your PC, they will be named in ascending alphabetical order like “D” then “E” then “F” and so on. This is the reason why the hard drive is assigned with the name “C”.

But it is not true that you can not provide these drive letter to any drive manually. You can easily use the drive letter “A” and drive letter “B” on your favorite storage device. To do that go and search ‘Disk Management’ on the search option of your computer then you will meet this window.

Disk Management

Then select your drive and right click on it then select the option “Change Drive Letter and Paths”.

When next popup will open then click on change and select your favorite drive letter. and click on ‘ok’.

The Results

So, If you need to change the drive letters which was by default assigned you can, of course, change them but after changing these drive letters you may face some problems in the future.

This is a very interesting and informative question as well. Hope you guys have got your answer, if so, then don’t forget to comment down below to appreciate my work thank you so much.
